Sunday, August 1, 1965
It rained last night and at 9:30 am it is still raining. Started to rain again at 12:35 and it is still raining at 2 o'clock, ten minutes after that it slaked up. I washed some pint jars to put my bread and butter pickles in.
Monday, August 2, 1965
I canned 9 pints of bread and butter pickles. Mr. and Mrs. Kosistra was here to look at place. Peter and Effie came over this evening and we had a lovely visit. I gave them some bread and butter pickles, she brought over her dress pattern.

Nice day today. We went to Orpha's and Orby went to Kalamazoo. Orpha did not feel too good. We gave Orpha $5.00 for her Birthday and Rosemary $2.00. (Back then $2.00 would buy a Record Album or about 8 gallons of gas)
Wednesday, August 4, 1965
Sent Orpha and Rosemary Birthday cards. Sent Merle a letter, sent match mothers letter, sent Rev. at Akron letter. Orby went to Plainwell store for groceries. I did a wash then ironed them. Dad trimmed raspberries, been selling sweet corn.

We went near Scotts on 34th Street and got apples. Ike came over after we got home and we gave him apples and corn. I made sauce for our supper.

My dear grand daughter's birthday, Rosemary and she is a darling girl. I put up 5 pints of apple sauce and did a wash. We gave her $2.00.

I worked nearly all day, put up bread and butter pickles and defrosted refrigerator and put corn in to freeze. I am tired.
Sunday, August 8, 1965
Today is my darling Orpha, my daughter's Birthday. We gave her $5.00. We are going to eat out as it is Rosemary, Claudia and Dad's birthday month. (Not Claudia's) We sold last corn around 2 o'clock and I am glad it is all gone. I put a lot in my freezer. I also put up bread and butter pickles. Well, Bud took Orpha, Rosemary and Dad for their birthday, had a nice dinner, then a nice ride after dinner.

My dear Daughter Orpha's birthday was yesterday, she was 55 years young, she don't show her age, looks more like 35. Well, today it rained a drizzle nearly all day. Ike came over brought papers and 6 peaches, they were good.

Well, it is a nice day but little chilly. Orpha came over and gave Dad a birthday card and told us she saw doctor and he wants her to wait till she weights 135 lbs. before he operates on her.

My dear husband's birthday, he will be 82 years young. Orpha came over and gave Orby a Birthday card. Then we went over to see Mrs. Parker and she raised her price on her place. She now wants $25,000.00, She can keep it for we won't pay that much. Washed my dear husband's face on his birthday.

I did a wash and made 7 pints of bread and butter pickles, made apple sauce for dinner also had Kali greens.

Ike brought paper over. Orby had went to Plainwell after belt for washer. Ike left $6.00 for his Birthday so Ike went home then I called him after Orby got back and he came over and helped fix the belt on washer. I did some ironing.

We put down linoleum under washer and put a new belt on washer, cost $3.09 then I mopped the breezeway. It looks nice. Had corn for dinner. Orpha and Rosemary came over awhile as they were going after groceries. We gave them some corn.

Sat around, it is quite warm, had potatoes, apple sauce, asparagus, kala, peaches, pickles. Went over to Ike's and had quite a visit.

Did a big wash as I washed white also colored clothes. My washer needs repair don't know what it will cost but Orby went to Kalamazoo after dinner, has not got back yet and it is 4:45 pm.It has been rain quite a shower. I canned more pints of pickles.

Got my order from Aldens and slips and bras, was too small. Dad went to Plainwell and got rubber for front of the washer and I helped put it on now it is as new, cost $5.66 for belt and rubber front. Warner came late evening. She still likes our place. Dad bought some sirloin meat at Plainwell, it was good.

I washed out a few pieces to see how the washer worked and it was fine. I wanted to wash my runner in breezeway but I never got it done. It has to rain again. Got my order and returning 2 slips 3 bras to Aldens.

I went to Dr. Brown, he said my blood pressure was 220 over 40 and should be 180 or 40. Pretty high said for me to take 4 tablets and 1 tablet every day for a while.
Friday, August 20, 1965
Washed clothes and ironed my ironing and canned 9 pints of bread and butter pickles. I made biscuits for supper. I don't feel too good. I am just awful. Couple from Kalamazoo was looking at place, her name Harvey and his was Long, she had a daughter around 15 years. They were going to get married.

Ike came over with papers. Dad went after my blood pressure pills Brown ordered. Had our TV 1 year today.

Dad went to Cooper, bought bacon, pork chops, cakes. Will have my beans for dinner. I had froze in refrigerator. I am not too good but I think a little better thanks to my Lord. Orby is picking cucumbers. We took a ride after dinner and Mr. and Mrs. Anderegg came, had coffee cake for us and left note saying it was in mail box.

Orpha and Rosemary came over said Bud went fishing. Orby called I guess that is the reason she came. She did not stay too long, then after dinner Mr. and Mrs. Dennis and Dorothy came. Dorothy is going to stay till September then she goes back and I guess Dennis' will go too. I hate to see them go as Mrs. Dennis don't look too good.
I don't know, Orby said he got paint today.

Today is my darling daughter Daisy's Birthday, her wedding anniversary is August 26th. She has been gone to heaven now 1 year 9 months. I got dinner had new beans, pork chops and potatoes. I don't feel too good, guess I had too much company yesterday. Dad mopped kitchen for me. He has 9 bushel pears picked.

Haven't done much. I made a date nut bread. I am trying to gain my strength back. Wrote Lucille a letter and sent Dr. McNabb death announcement to her as she doctored with him a little, I think, anyway i know she and Bessie knew him. Ike was here, brought over papers.

Today was Daisy's wedding anniversary. They would have been married 48 years today. I surely miss my dear darling first baby and never a day passes as I pray for all of us. Men plowed the corn field today, I don't feel too good.

Started taking Geritol. Bud and Orpha came over a while this afternoon. Dad was to Kalamazoo but came home before they went. They brought over a nice mess of fish.

I worked nearly all day as Dad went to Kalamazoo and brought home 1/2 bushel of peaches and they were dead ripe so I went canned them as they would have spoiled.

Dad started to paint house and it is not the color I wanted, too yellow, so he quit. I guess we decided to put paint on but I will pick the color to trim. I don't feel too good yet but am better. Orpha has a cold, what Rosemary said and Bud went fishing.

I canned 8 more bread and butter pickles, now I have over 50 pints canned. Orby is painting. the lady called said my insurance check was down there and she would send it. Orby sold 3 bushel of pears today.

Got check of $293.35. 1/2 is $146.675 mine. Orby bought 1 gallon of paint to another store, Thrifty Acres. $5.81 tax included. He sold 4 1/2 bushels of pears.

Ike and Orby and I went fishing at Big Lake, got 13. We saw Donald out there with Donna and Lila. They were fishing and he wanted us to take the fish he had but we would not, so when we had dinner here came Ike with some fish. Donald sent us all cleaned. Bless him and his family. I did a small wash and ironed them. My but I am tired from my fishing yesterday. DeYoung's were here last night to see about this place, he can raise $12,000.00 but still be $6,000.00 to pay. Orpha and Rosemary came a while, then a woman from Parchment looked at the house.

Mrs. Bastain was here and I showed her my crochet work, she thought it was nice then she went home. 4 people came and picked some cherries. Nice day.

Went to Dennis' for dinner. Had a nice visit. They, neither one, feel too good, just like Dad and I. We don't feel too well. Was a nice day. Traffic was not too heavy but we went early and came home early. Stopped at Hardy's but she was not at home. We have stopped there twice then one time the car was gone.

Well, I did a wash and Orby went to sell the asparagus. Nice day. I called Orpha and Effie. They had an awful accident with their car and trailer with boat. Bud's gave us 8 nice fish and we cleaned them and it was after 11 when we got in bed.

I washed 3 rugs, mopped kitchen and bath room. Cleaned over a gallon of beans and am tired. Mrs. Hardy called, I told her we had been there, she said she was sorry as she wanted to see us. She is pretty lonesome since Elmer passed away. man came and took pictures of this place, he was from the loan company.

I sent a letter today then I did my wash and had breakfast and Dad went to Vicksburg after a load of sawdust. I stayed at Effie's and we had an awful nice visit, Dorin (Could be Don can't read) was upstairs a sleep, he was limping as he hurt his leg. Effie gave me some fish, I took her some asparagus. She also gave me two china fish, salt and pepper shakers. My i think a lot of Effie and Pete.

It is raining this morning but I don't think it will last too long. I baked 2 cherry pies. Mrs. Dennis called. Said Ernest had a row of rhubarb now, so now next year they can have all they want.

Bastin gave Orby $3.25 for 18 cement blocks. Nice day but chilly Orby picked a mess of beans and brought in bunch of asparagus. Ike's pants is 36-31. We bought a motor off Peter for $25.00. It is 5 horse power. I hope it is okay, it is a Sears.

Stayed home all day. I canned 4 qts. beans and 1 pt. of asparagus. It was nice today. We sold 8 pt. of red raspberries and 11 pt. yesterday at 35 cents a pint.

I did 2 washers of clothes, mopped the breezeway, canned 4 qt. beans yesterday and they look nice. Went to Orpha after dinner and Dad went to Kalmazoo took pants to have exchanged but they were having inventory so would not wait on him.

Sold berries. Ike came over and they tired out the motor we got from Pete. I ironed and fixed my dress, cleaned mess of beans, it is 6 horse instead of 5.

Went fishing at Portage Lake. Ike took us. We paid 50 cents to get boat on lake, did not catch many. Ike took dinner with us, when we got back from lake we stopped at store to have pants exchanged but got money back as they did not have 36-31.

Dad is picking raspberries I am cooking beans. Fixed my sleeves in dress. Dad sold 11 pts. of raspberries today. 35 cents $3.85. DeYoung's was here tonight and antoher man and his wife came to look at place.

It is cold this a.m. Orby is going to Kalamazoo with raspberries and Stevenson's Funeral is on TV at 11, I want to hear it.

Today is Ike's Birthday. My son-in-law and we love him. He is so nice to us. He will be (blank) years. Well it looks like rain today and the berries should be picked. Went to Ike's, gave him money $4.00 also $2.00 for gas, got letter from my dear son.

Claudia and babies came over and I had her stay for dinner. She went home quite early as she had to do some ironing, got letter form Merle Saturday.

I vacuumed all the house and cleaned my cupboards. Orpha called and said Bud's brother and family from Chicago was coming and she said she and Bud and Rosemary were coming over and they would be here 9 o'clock. Well they came and stayed till 10:30 pm, we enjoyed their company. Had ice cream and cookies they seemed very nice.

My dear son's Birthday is today also my Dad's and Mothers marrie date, July 27, 1877. They both died in 1897 in Indiana. Mother in Lafountain, Dad in Denver Indiana. Both buried in Courter Cemetery beside our little brother. I made 7 pts. of bread and butter pickles, did my ironing. I am very tired.

We went to see Blanche and Edith but they were not at home so we drove over to Ester's and she was gone. Then we drove past Ike's and had a nice visit with him.

Orpha, Claudia and babies was here a while this forenoon as they had Father's Day gift for Dad. The babies are growing, Anita is 14 months old and Dennise will be 3 on October 25, 1965.

Today was my Brother's Birthday, he would of been 82 if he would have lived. Orby sold some asparagus. Had northern beans and drop dumplings, radishes, nut bread, pickles, meat for dinner. Mrs. gave us a box of strawberries and we gave her flowers.

Sitting around listening to ministers on TV. Orpha went to cemetery then stopped at Ike's and he gave her the papers, so she stopped here a few minutes.

Looks like rain. I did not wash. Orpha came over this afternoon with Brain, Bob's boy. He is a talker and bright. He was little backward at first but got over it, he looks a lot like his Dad. (He still does) Orpha is sweet, I love her so much, good girl.

Well, I did my wash had it on line 8:15 am. It looks good and i am glad I got it finished early. Orpha called said she is going to call the other doctor. Dr. Klerk won't do the operation.

I did my ironing and cleaned my blinds in front room so after dinner will clean blinds in bedrooms. I feel tired. Turned out to be nice after the little rain. Warner's were here to look at place. I cleaned the two bedrooms.

I did a wash, the clothes line broke, let my clothes down. I got them taken off the line and fixed the line and put them up again. I hope it don't come down again. Orby is not at home, gone to sell asparagus.

Nice day. I did some wash and washed my table cloth out and washed 3 pair of pants and two shirts and 3 pair of socks. I cleaned all my front room furniture and took cornice down, polished furniture and I am so tired. Ike he brought over papers, gave Dad $2.00 for Father's Day.

Nice day but chilly. I don't do much work on the Sabbath for it is God's day. Bud and Dad went fishing, did not catch any to bring home. I stayed to Orpha's and we went out for supper. Then around evening Bud and Dad got home, had their supper then we came home watched the Titanic program, it was awful lot of people perished, when ship struck the iceberg. Got in bed 1:30 am Sunday.

Orby took asparagus to sell and picked beans. He did not feel too good. Went to Dr. goddard but he did not give him medicine, only rubbed some medicine on his tonque. Ike went to Sandy's for a fish supper. (Sandy McLaughlin Zantello)

Dad washed 3 windows on outside. I put up 9 pt. asparagus and fr ooze 2 qts. beans. We are going to have for dinner our first new beans. It is cooler to day. Bud came after the trailer after dinner. Sprinkled a little. Our asparagus about ended.

It is cool today. I put up a few pts. of asparagus, had beans, meat, pickles, potatoes for dinner. Edith and Blanche was here this afternoon also Ike came a while and Bud brought home the trailer he borrowed. Dad gave Blanche a bunch of asparagus.

We went to the Brethren Church, enjoyed ourselves, came home, got dinner then Bud and Orpha came over and took a long ride over to some lake where he was looking to put his pontoon. Had a nice day. Bud and Orpha stayed for lunch.

I washed some sheets. Mrs. Bastain was over when I was putting out my wash. She seems nice but has never been in my house, I've been at her house 3 times. I called Bud last night for them to keep paper of taxes for me. I showed her my crochet work, she did not stay too long.

Dorothy and Rosie goes to Ann Arbor today. Ike takes them. They won't stay. Dad is putting out flowers north of garage, will have a mess of dandelions today for dinner. Bastain got new riding mower. I washed my two rugs, got Mother's day card from Dorothy and Butch.

I got a nice tablecloth from Merle's in card also a nice handkerchief from Joyce and card. Got card from Dorothy and Butch. I mopped breezeway, washed and ironed. I am tired out.

Mother's Day. Orpha and Bud was here a short time, brought me a lovely large Mother's day card and some cosmetics. I love them all, then after dinner we drove to South Bend to Elmer and Barbara, they was not at home. Then we drove to Dowagiac to see Peg and Roy, visited there a while, then on way home stopped to Blanches and they were gone, had a lovely drive.

Bud brought mower home, had it down to shop for an old man to fix. I set coffee and glazed donuts for him bu the took the coffee but not the donuts. Ike was also here, brought the papers. It is nice. Sun shinny day and i cleaned my front room. changed furniture around. Dad is mowing the yard. Sold 5 lbs. asparagus at house this side of Indian Camp.

Dad stopped at bud's and he said he was not too good, his back hurt also my back hurts. I did too much work today. Cleaned the refrigerator and washed cupboard doors beside cleaning the floors.

I sent an order for a dress at Lane Bryant. My order was $12.36. I am going to Orpha's for a shot time this morning. Well I stayed longer than I thought. We had lunch for dinner and stayed quite a while after dinner. Dennis came over to help bud spade in flower bed. Then we went to Ike's after just went straight on the main road. We bought a jar of yellow mums at Plainwell.

I dried my spread, then Dad's, made it narrower as he was tearing it so was the bed leg when moved. He never watched moving it so the spread got under it as the spread was quite old.

Went to the store bought a nice flower for daisy's grave also for Grandpa put some flowers on Orpha's baby's grave. Stopped at Ike's. Rosie and Gerry was there had quite a nice visit.

It is snowing today. I have an ironing to do. I have my afghan all pieced but now I intend to go over all seams with embroidery thread. Some one had an accident in front of Summer's, Dad April fooled me.

My sister's birthday. (Lydia) Sewed all seams on the quilted afghan. Nice day. Dad mopped kitchen. I had pancakes for dinner. Vacuumed the rooms. Mr. Elmer Hardy died today, will be buried at Marcellus.

Well, we had a very nice day and after dinner we went to Pete and Effie's and Pet looks a lot better and Effie too. We also saw Donald, Effie's son. He has a new car, lavender Chevy. Effie gave me enough material to make me a dress. She gave it to me to line my pieced Afghan but I think I will make a dress.

I washed the goods I intend to use the old cloth I bought for a quilt. I have had quite a while but thought I would use it on my afghan. Sent the minister $5.00 today.

I finished my afghan today, it looks real nice and started to take the gathers out of my dress. I don't like the pleated or gathered in dresses. I cleaned blinds.

Went to Wall Lake with Realtor to look at 2 places at lake for sale. $8,900.00. Came home had dinner then phoned Orpha, and asked if she wanted to go look at the places and we all went and had an awful nice time. Enjoyed every minute. Had supper at Bud's.

Went to Otsego to see the little evergreen trees Ike set out on Daisy's grave. (They are not there anymore, I don't know what happened to them) The high school girls were raking leaves, we also bought us 2 places for burial, cost $40.00 for both. (Right next to Daisy, Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, MI) Ike went with us.

Went to Orpha's, had a nice dinner and a lovely visit. Got letter from Merle, they are pretty good. He said they took a drive Sunday and went to the Dam, said lots of travel on roads.

Stayed home, did not do much of anything. I want to answer Merle's letter soon. I called Effie, she came home Monday, said Pete was better. I also called Orpha, she is okay. Bud asked Orpha why I didn't stay with her all night.

We went to Rosie's and Ike's. First we went to Ike's, he and Dorothy went to Kalamazoo. He got home little after 3 but we was then to Rosie's. He told us that Doris, the neighbor visited him.

Well today is Sabbath and I am not doing much. Dad took some beef back that wasn't too good. Orpha is better so is Rosemary and I am sure glad. Rosemary got another cold shot. Dorothy is not too good either. She now has a tumor on her leg. Got order from Sears.

Today is quite nice. Dad shoveled out driveway. Glad it was done as our minister, Mr. John Tomlonson came for a short visit. We gave him some grapefruit, we bought in Arizona. Ike is feeling some better, said he is keeping his driveway shoveled out.

Sun shinning, nice but quite a lot of wind. I vacuumed my 4 rooms. Dad is thinking of going to Kalamazoo, I may go along, don't know yet. Dad trimmed my toenails. I think my corn is healing.

Well, we went to Otsego to see Ike. Took him grapefruit and some dates. He gave me some plastic refrigerator dishes and a large coffee can. He looks pretty good. Dad mopped my floor, bless his heart. It nearly kills me to do it.

Spent 3 hours reading bible and listening to radio preaching. Orpha and Bud came over for a while. The roads are pretty good. I gave Bud a piece of my date nut bread.

Orpha and Bob came over, Bud is acting up again. I can't see why he can't behave. I hope they get things straightened up. I am starting on cleaning my house,have my bedroom about cleaned.

Well, I ironed curtains and helped put them up and sorted out some papers, now I really am gave out. I don't want to move to do another lick till I am plum rested. I have now my bedroom cleaned but it took me 2 1/2 days. Ike came over with a box of candy for my Birthday. A man was here for us to sign papers about a sewer.

Sat around all day. Orpha came around but said she had her dinner. We just sat down to eat, we had beef stew, bought it had peas, potatoes, gravy and beef.

It started to snow. Dad went to Kalamazoo to exchange vitamins for me. He is going to see Montgomery about a stove they have in the paper for sale. I did a wash today. Dad ordered a cook electric stove from Montgomery $164.00 plus $6.56 tax, freight $5.62. I ordered vitamins from New York. Did not get the stove they did not have it, that's what they said.

Well, today Peter Workentine is going to have an operation at the Saint Mary Hospital, Mayo Rochester, Minnesota. I nearly finished the dresser scarf. I've been working. It is nice. Dad went to Kalamazoo and bought new shoes.

My Mother's Birthday, if living would be 114. She was nearly 30 when I was born. I was born 13th of February. She the 25th of February. It snowed today and snow now in drive way is quite deep. I did my ironing. Bessie called said Pete had another operation Wednesday and was full of cancers. Don't know when he will be home, too bad for Effie. I feel sorry for both of them.

Well, Orby went to doctor at Plainwell today. I sent letter to Effie at the Hospital as I got Pete's card. I sent him back as I failed to put his name on it. We had our drive way cleaned out today, cost $3.00.
