August 1961

(Rosa is 80 and Orby is 78, and they live on Douglas Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan, they have enough land there to grow some vegetables, fruit and flowers, which they sell. I remember them telling my Mother (Orpha) that they grew and sold enough to pay the property taxes.)

Tuesday, August 1, 1961
Men came to cut down the trees and Summers came over and one of the man and Summers got in to it, and the kid held Summers down like a baby. Finally he let him up. I laughed till I nearly cried. I hung out the wash and it finally got dry.
Wednesday, August 2, 1961
I called Daisy, they are coming over and I will fix her chair cushion. The men came and cut down a tree we looked for them after dinner. Daisy and Ike came over and I made her cover and she brought me over 2 tomatoes and 4 cartons to put in the left overs. Dad drawed the wood in from the trees and piled his brush, mowed grass. Rained last night everything looks nice.

I did a wash, I did all my dollies and some other. Dad got up real early and he and Mr. Summers were having a talk, I was worried. The man came this afternoon to trim up their trees he had down.

I did up all the dollies, I had and they look real nice. I dread the ironing of them.
Saturday, August 5, 1961
It is drizzling rain. I went all over this house with vacuum, then I mopped the kitchen and bathroom. Daisy and Ike came over, brought us watermelon, muskmelon and some sweet corn they had bought, tasted awful good.

Rosemary's birthday, she is 12 years old. (That's me) It is a little damp and chilly, had my first tomatoes, they were so good.
Monday, August 7, 1961
Went to Orpha, had a swell time, they took me over to see Claudia's house. Then came back, had dinner and Claudia showed me some real nice things she had for her new home. Orpha had been painting and done a real good job. I took Orpha some tomatoes and corn for our dinner.
Tuesday, August 8, 1961
Orpha's Birthday. I gave her a drainer and 2 matts, pink color. Dad is hoeing weeds from potatoes, nice cool day.
Wednesday, August 9, 1961
Stayed home, did a little washing, my it is hot today. I don't like hot weather. I nearly melt. Daisy called me up at 9 o'clock and said Shirley Temple was on, it was just grand. Dad went to see Rose about the line fence.

Nice and cool this morning. Dad is mowing the lawn. It sure rained a nice rain and it sure will make our corn and potatoes grow. Had a nice mess of corn for dinner.

Dad's Birthday. He got 4 cards and pants and money. Daisy and Ike was over. Said Dorothy was thinking about going to Ann Arbor to see about her hand. Had corn for dinner.

Today we sold our first corn. It is good tasting, gave the neighbor Mr. Bastain some corn. Sold over $4.00 in corn.

Went to Dennis' for dinner had a good time it was a nice day. They were selling corn and quite a few stopped, they are talking of leaving for Florida when their garden is over, I hate to see them go.

Dad took corn to Plainwell and sold it. Orpha and the girls was here, Orpha brought payment over and some money on the other, Bud owed. We gave her 3 dozen sweet corn.

Dad sold corn to day, had pretty good luck.

Orpha and girls was here, took home some corn. Got my corset and vitamins from Montgomery Wards, I planted radishes today.

Dad has a load of corn to sell today. The weather is cool this morning. Daisy and Ike was over a while, brought the pillow she wanted me to cover. Mr. Loitherette fixed our pump brushes.

Daisy was over brought some papers for us, they buy groceries from Thompson store there on Douglas Drive.

Dennis' came, had a good visit. They stayed late, we always have such good times with them.

I did not wash today, I made the top for Daisy's pillow, it looks nice.
Tuesday, August 22, 1961
Went to Otsego, took the pillow over that I covered, she said Bushie got on top of the car and jumped down, broke his toe. I did my wash this morning, then ironed. They think he just sprained his toe. (Wonder who Bushie is?)

Orpha called, said they did not have her washer fixed yet and she needed it bad. Daisy gave me a black dress with white design.

Daisy's Birthday, I gave her a red dish drainer and 2 mats, she likes red. Got my corset from Montgomery.
Friday, August 25, 1961
Went to Orphas. Claudia got out all the pretties she got last Saturday at her shower. They were so nice. I gave her a clock, she liked it.
Saturday, August 26, 1961
Today is Saturday, it is drizzling rain, our tomatoes are riping up now and they are nice. I canned 14 pt. corn today. Daisy was here, she did not get out of car, she was sick. She said all over. I will oven cook the pints 2 hours and I have 2 qt. can I will cook 3 hours. I hope it keeps good.

Today 4 of my jars come open, so I recooked them 1 hour in over. I first boiled them around 5 minutes then put in jars. It rained some last night. (No, no one in our family has died of food poisoning..that I know of)
Monday, August 28, 1961
today, I canned 4 pints tomatoes and am crocheting a Dolley. Dad went to sell corn. I wish he would not have went as it looks so much like rain and it thundering right now. Dad got suit cleaned.

Orpha called and said she was awful busy. I felt sick at stomach and bowels, then at 2 o'clock last night I really had an awful headache, still aches.
Wednesday, August 30, 1961
Stayed home, done a small wash. My it is hot today, Dad sold 15 dozen corn and I made some bread and butter pickles from Mary Dunbar cookbook.

I did a small wash and made some bread and butter pickles and did my ironing.
