August 1963

(Orby turns 80 this month, they buy a 1963 Ford Galaxie but still no new TV, and they have not sold their home)

Thursday, August 1, 1963
Orpha, Claudia, Rosemary and baby Dennise were here a while today. I was so glad to see the baby is a darling, she was 9 months the 25th of July. Dad went to Kalamazoo to sell sweet corn.

Looks like rain. It did rain. Dad still selling corn.

Went to Daisy's and Dad and Ike went to sale, but did not buy anything.

I called up Daisy and asked them over for dinner but she said she did not feel too good. Brian is 7 months old today. (Brian Gimbel, Bob's baby)

Went to Three Rivers then back to Kalamazoo to see about televisions but they were too high. We went to Green's store and Armstrong's.

My little Rosemary's birthday, a little sweet heart. I gave her money and card. She called me and said she got the card and money. (I am 14) We sold last corn we had today.
Wednesday, August 7, 1963
Kennedy's got a new son, born today. Mr. Mrs. (blank) was here today from Arizona. They looked at our place. Dad gave them some rhubarb. I did some wash, my mouth is still bothering me. Such bad taste, nice day.
Thursday, August 8, 1963
Today is my Dear little Orpha's Birthday. (53 years old) She's a darling and my baby girl. She was here, brought me a lovely bunch of glads and also Claudia and baby came. Ike and Daisy was here. Ike tried to fix my stove but could not. Dad bought me Phillips Milk of Magnesia, mint flavor for acid stomach. I think it helped me.

Today Ike and Daisy came and Ike tried to fix my burners. Daisy has not been too well, it was pretty hot today.

I did some wash, ironing, mopped and washed two kitchen chairs. I am tired, my mouth still has that bad taste.

Orby's Birthday, he is 80 years old and still my sweet heart. It is chilly this morning. Went to Orpha's for Dad's birthday. Then we brought home Rosemary for a night. We sure had lot of fun playing bingo and checkers.

Well, we had a lot of fun with Rosemary and we went to Otsego this afternoon and Dad went to the store to see televisions.

Orby went to get car fixed with soft plugs. bud was here a few minutes and it is cold today. Seems like it is going to get winter.

Orby went to Kalamazoo. I sent for a carpet cleaner. Dad got new soft plug put in our car.

Wrote Merle a letter also Joyce. Went to Otsego took some beans over for Donald. Daisy said Mr. Blessing was staying with his daughter.

Getting ready to shop for a TV. We did not go, vacuumed my front room.
Saturday, August 17, 1963
We went to Kalamazoo, to Vicksburg, to look at TV. We was to George's then we come home and got a bite to eat and while we were eating Mrs. Dalson Harper came. We sure had a nice visit. I had not seen her for over 25 years, the same old gal, but lots older. We talked of old times. I went over to Orpha's and spent the evening. Claudia, Dennis and baby came. Claudia and Dennis went to show, Orpha babysat.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis was here today. We had a nice time. They are going to Florida soon as their crops are off.

We got order from Aldens, the carpet cleaner and refrigerator defroster.

Went car hunting, went to Kalamazoo then Paw Paw then to Gobles then Allegan but did not get any car. I saw Daisy's new set of dishes she got and her hair dryer. Ike bought her, they are pretty. Bought 1963 Galaxie Ford, paid $2,500.oo difference, it is ming green, bought it at Plainwell Michigan.

Dad went down to Plainwell to get the new Ford we bought but before he went we cleaned out garage and did a lot of washing the wood work and swept the garage floor. I am surely tired. we went to daisy's to show off the car then we went to Bob's, got a clock $2.27 tax and all at Muirs. We also went to daisy's to show them our new car, she don't feel too good.

I started to iron and my navel came out and I could not get it back. Called Dr. Mcdill and Orby took me to hospital and then Mcdill came and put it in. Wanted me to stay at Hospital 2 days but I said no, so they put a band on me and I came home, got dinner and finished my ironing. (Wow)
Saturday, August 24, 1963
My darling daughter's birthday, she is my first baby and a dear one. (Daisy, she is 64) Looks like rain, I trimmed my corn. Orby defrosted the refrigerator. I feel worn out. I vacuumed the front room 4 times then Dad went over it with my new rug cleaner. It looks nice, then I washed the 3 rockers in front room and 2 in breezeway. Washed the rubber rug Ike bought us and cleaned 2 spots on the runner and I am pooped out.

Dennise is 10 months old today. Went to Dennis' to show off our new car, had a nice visit.

I did some wash today then this afternoon Claudia came over with Dennise. She is a sweet baby. I think she would have liked to stay longer.

I did a wash and ironed what I washed Monday.

Daisy and Ike came over a while, said Betty's knee was better. Dorothy had been out helping with the hay.
Thursday, August 29, 1963
I cleaned out my medicine cabinet today, sorted out the medicine. Called Mrs. Dennis, she said grandma fell and they went over and helped her up. She also said Dorothea was starting for Michigan next Monday. Got letter from my son Merle.
Friday, August 30, 1963
Dad called Orpha and invited her for dinner and she and Rosemary came and we also called Bud and Bob and they came for dinner, we had a nice visit.
Saturday, August 31, 1963
We went over to Daisy's and took them some corn and pears. We did not stay long.
