June 1965

(Rosa is 84 and Orby will be 82 in August. They still have not sold their 5 acres on Douglas Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan.)


Tuesday, June 1, 1965
Today is my Silva, Sister-in-law's Birthday. She would have been 85 years old.
Orby is gone to Otsego. I will have short cake for dinner, the first we have had.
Wednesday, June 2, 1965
Dad has 35 lbs. of asparagus to sell, it is rainy today.
Thursday, June 3, 1965
Went to Orpha's after dinner and she fixed my hair and it looks good. Then Orby came after me, had a nice visit. Got my order from Aldens, I got 5 panties and goods for 2 dresses.
Friday, June 4, 1965
Orby went to Bud's to get our grass mower to take to Sears to see about having it fixed. I did a small wash.
Saturday, June 5, 1965
Well, Orby took asparagus to Kalamazoo to sell. One woman took 16 lb. Rosie and Gerry came over for a short visit, Rosie feels some better. (Rosie and Gerry McLaughlin)
Sunday, June 6, 1965
We went to see Blanche and Edith but they were not at home so we drove over to Ester's and she was gone. Then we drove past Ike's and had a nice visit with him.
Monday, June 7, 1965
I have started to make me a dress, the material is nice, hope I can get a good fit. This after noon White's and Gilbert's wife stopped, they were on their way to Mr. White's sister. Mrs. John Lewis at Parchment. (I think the White's are Letha's family, ?)

I did a big wash and had a very nice day. The clothes dried real quick.

I am making me an apron. Ike brought over some papers. Our mower is not fixed so grass is getting pretty high.
Thursday, June 10, 1965
Orpha came, got me and we all had a good time. Orpha went to the doctor and I stayed to Orpha's with Rosemary and Claudia. We had dinner to a drive in. Sharon graduates tonight. I am not going. I don't feel too good. Sent the minister, John Tomlonson $5.00 plus $1.00.
Friday, June 11, 1965
I finished my apron and am tired, sewing makes me so tired but I like to sew. Got our mower and Orby said it runs better then when new. Wrote Merle a letter but too late to send it.
Saturday, June 12, 1965
Dad took some asparagus to sell today, talked to Mrs. Dennis also Orpha, she said she was going back to bed as she did not feel too good.
Sunday, June 13, 1965
Stayed home all day, a couple and baby was here to look at place. Their name was Jerry DeYoung, they like this place. Got letter from Barbara, they are going to Arizona coming home the 28th of June.
Monday, June 14, 1965
Sent Merle a letter. Washed clothes. Dorothy came over today. She looks real good, her hand is better.
Tuesday, June 15, 1965
Did my ironing and wash again today. Ike came over with a qt. of nice strawberries. I mopped kitchen and bath, was real tired when I got it all done.
Wednesday, June 16, 1965
Dad took some asparagus to sell, got back early. I made short cake for dinner. Orpha talked to me, said she was going after her glasses. I did my ironing.
Thursday, June 17, 1965
Today is winding. I don't feel too good, sometimes I dread to move. Got my hand cream and room deodorant $4.50. Was to Ike's and he gave us papers to bring home.
Friday, June 18, 1965
Orpha, Claudia and babies was here a while this forenoon as they had Father's Day gift for Dad. The babies are growing, Anita is 14 months old and Dennise will be 3 on October 25, 1965.
Saturday, June 19, 1965
Today was my Brother's Birthday, he would of been 82 if he would have lived. Orby sold some asparagus. Had northern beans and drop dumplings, radishes, nut bread, pickles, meat for dinner. Mrs. gave us a box of strawberries and we gave her flowers.
Sunday, June 20, 1965
Sitting around listening to ministers on TV. Orpha went to cemetery then stopped at Ike's and he gave her the papers, so she stopped here a few minutes.
Monday, June 21, 1965
Looks like rain. I did not wash. Orpha came over this afternoon with Brain, Bob's boy. He is a talker and bright. He was little backward at first but got over it, he looks a lot like his Dad. (He still does) Orpha is sweet, I love her so much, good girl.
Tuesday, June 22, 1965
Well, I did my wash had it on line 8:15 am. It looks good and i am glad I got it finished early. Orpha called said she is going to call the other doctor. Dr. Klerk won't do the operation.
Wednesday, June 23, 1965
I did my ironing and cleaned my blinds in front room so after dinner will clean blinds in bedrooms. I feel tired. Turned out to be nice after the little rain. Warner's were here to look at place. I cleaned the two bedrooms.
Thursday, June 24, 1965
I did a wash, the clothes line broke, let my clothes down. I got them taken off the line and fixed the line and put them up again. I hope it don't come down again. Orby is not at home, gone to sell asparagus.
Friday, June 25, 1965
Nice day. I did some wash and washed my table cloth out and washed 3 pair of pants and two shirts and 3 pair of socks. I cleaned all my front room furniture and took cornice down, polished furniture and I am so tired. Ike he brought over papers, gave Dad $2.00 for Father's Day.
Saturday, June 26, 1965
Nice day but chilly. I don't do much work on the Sabbath for it is God's day. Bud and Dad went fishing, did not catch any to bring home. I stayed to Orpha's and we went out for supper. Then around evening Bud and Dad got home, had their supper then we came home watched the Titanic program, it was awful lot of people perished, when ship struck the iceberg. Got in bed 1:30 am Sunday.

We got up around 6 o'clock and had breakfast. Nice day. Wrote letter to Merle, hot day.
Monday, June 28, 1965
Orby took asparagus to sell and picked beans. He did not feel too good. Went to Dr. goddard but he did not give him medicine, only rubbed some medicine on his tonque. Ike went to Sandy's for a fish supper. (Sandy McLaughlin Zantello)
Tuesday, June 29, 1965
Dad washed 3 windows on outside. I put up 9 pt. asparagus and fr ooze 2 qts. beans. We are going to have for dinner our first new beans. It is cooler to day. Bud came after the trailer after dinner. Sprinkled a little. Our asparagus about ended.
Wednesday, June 30, 1965
It is cool today. I put up a few pts. of asparagus, had beans, meat, pickles, potatoes for dinner. Edith and Blanche was here this afternoon also Ike came a while and Bud brought home the trailer he borrowed. Dad gave Blanche a bunch of asparagus.
