March 1964

(Rosa is 83 and Orby will be 81 in August. They are still trying to sell their home on Douglas Avenue and still mourning the loss of their daughter Daisy. They seem to be doing "Spring" cleaning, I can say, I never, ever remember their home being messy or dirty, always very clean.)

36 degrees this morning. Stayed home all day, Dad did not feel too good.
Monday, March 2, 1964
I did my ironing, my hand is better. Got letter from Merle and Clare got his job and will make $5,235.00 per year and I am so glad for him. Letha is not much better. I have an awful stomach.
Tuesday, March 3, 1964
It was 40 degrees at 6 am when we got up, but it is cloudy today. I called Orpha and she is taking Claudia to Doctor this afternoon. I gave Ike a 4 piece set of blue flower dishes. I hope he uses them, they are pretty.

42 degrees. Dad is going to Doctor today, appointment at 1:45 pm. Orpha was over a while, she would not stay for dinner. She looked good but I think she tries to do too much, always looking after others when she should put part time on herself.

32 degrees and it is some what colder, gloomy all day and rainy. Got letter from Lucille, she is not too good this chilly weather they are having. She said Nelson was planning on having a new house built in Southeast Mesa in Arizona.

At 6:15 am degree 24. Seems warmer than was in the night. I got my stockings 3 pair from Sears, also the medicine, the stockings was too short in the leg but I kept them. I sent for 75A1882E $2.85. They sent 75X81112.

Degree 36. I called Effie and Pete was trying to sleep. Effie said come over but we will go some time, she has a lot of company.

32 degrees this morning. it snowed last night but did not seem cold, sitting around all day, listening to sermon on radio, they are good.

31 degrees this morning. Orpha just called and said her legs hurt pretty bad and she was going to see Dr. Crawford this afternoon. Monday afternoon Orby burned asparagus bushes. Sent the stockings back as i only wore them one afternoon and a large hole came in leg, so I sent them all back.

Degree 30 this morning. Did my wash and I am glad as I did not feel too good, called Orpha, she went to Doctor and he said she was a little better. He wants her to loose some weight. Ike called and said the government took some of his pension away form him. He said there were lots of men there and I guess that took pension away from many.

This morning somewhat colder. I did my ironing and mended 2 dresses, 2 slips and 3 aprons. Went to Orpha's as Orby went to Kalamazoo, had a nice visit. Orpha was getting a new bathroom set for her upstairs. It is nice color blue.

Was home all day and it has been a lovely day and not cold. I finished my yellow and blue pot holder then I put a binding all around my pot holder, that my brother gave me. It is the second time I have bound it, I want to keep it as long as I live. He died in 1939 in June, it is 44 at 4 pm. Mr. Doster was here today. got letter from Merle, he said Clare had tire trouble on his way to Mass where he had a job.

Well it is warmer 34 degrees and snow all gone. Did not do much, started to put trimming on pot holder and run out of thread, have to buy when we go to town. Orby called Ike and he don't feel too good., got a cold. Orpha called and she is feeling better.

Temperature at 7 o'clock 50 degrees. I made a batch of cookies, walnut and Ike come over with paper and I gave him some to eat.
Sunday, March 15, 1964
Went to Orpha's for dinner then after dinner we took a ride. Went to Ester Waits and she had a lot of company. Elsie and Lottie and many others. Had a nice visit. Then on our way home, stopped at Claudia and Dennis' Grandmother and husband was here. I took Orpha some cookies and canned tomatoes. She had ham and it was so nice and tender, swell dinner.

Paid bob $12.00 for fixing car, battery cost $15.55 through Bud. I went to Orpha's as they took Claudia to hospital last night at 3 but she came home but Dennise is to Orpha's today, she is a little rowdy, lively as can be but sweet little darling. Orby has piece of bone taken out where he had his tooth pulled, we got home at 3 pm.

We had a Mr. James look at our place. They live on D Avenue. Ike is better and Orpah is little rested.

It is 26 degrees and snowing. Dad is going to Otsego and going to send Joyce her gift, got letter form Rosa Myers for Marion.
Thursday, March 19, 1964
It was 21 this morning, little colder than Wednesday. Orpha called said Claudia about like she was yesterday. Snow about all gone. I got my stockings from Sears. I hope they are better than the ones I sent back to them.
Friday, March 20, 1964
It was 29 degrees this morning. I made walnut cookies today. I made them with dark sugar, I like the granulated sugar best. It is 12 o'clock now and snowing some. I cleaned and waxed all my furniture in front room and washed the wax flowers. I am tired. Dad mopped my kitchen and bathroom. I did some ironing for him.

Temperature 30, snowed last night. I was so tired last night that I went to bed around eight pm. Today I cleaned my table and waxed it and the 4 chairs and radio. I want to clean house next week as i have to take it slow as i can't work fast. Ike is still a little lame. He said he had his driveway all cleaned out, it is warmer and the snow has went about 1 inch, we did have 4 inches, it is wet sticky snow.

44 degrees at 10 o'clock, nice day. We stayed home, I did some cleaning and washed.
Monday, March 23, 1964
Went to Orpha's and had a nice visit only she did not feel too good. We came home before dinner. Claudia was coming over, I did my ironing and Ike came over with papers and had some pamphlets with the tombstone marker. One was real nice, I think he will get it for Daisy's grave, so it can be there on Mother's Day.

Grandpa's birthday, Orby's mother was Mary Genkiins. Temperature 42. I cleaned my bedroom, washed drapes and spread, temperature at 6 was 56. I shampooed my bedroom. Was nice nearly all day. Sprinkled rain around 5 o'clock but did not last long.

Joyce's birthday today. Temperature 40 at 6 am but it rained off and on last night. Well I want to clean Dad's room today. I am doing a wash and want to wash drapes and bedspreads. Dad bought a new tire, cost $14.67.

Well, I finished cleaning my front room. I have now my 2 bedrooms and front room cleaned. Am I so tired I want to make some chair arms for Orby's chair this week. I have some black goods. I have my kitchen and bath to clean. The breezeway and after I hope Orby cleans them.

I hung out drapes that I had washed and they got wet but they soon dried and i ironed them and hung them in Dad's room. My home is nicer now since I cleaned the 2 bedrooms and front room. Will begin on the kitchen next week. Ike brought over the papers.

I made Dad's chair covers and Dad went to Cooper, paid $3.85 for gas, he bought 1 1/2 yards of black material, pretty thin but I used it, it cost 93 cents. It may last a year, hope so as it was a job to put on as the cushion ins built in and that don't work so good as a seat cushion that comes out.

Today is Easter Sunday, had eggs for breakfast. Temperature 20. It snowed some last night and has snowed off and on all day. I did a wash and fixed Dad's chair. I am about wore out cleaning my 3 rooms but tomorrow I want to begin on my kitchen and bathroom after I get the ironing done. We were home all day.

Well, I have my kitchen about all cleaned now. I will wash and hang curtains. I get awful tired guess I better get vitamins to give me pep. I wrote Merle a letter also Mrs. Dennis.
Tuesday, March 31, 1964
Temperature at 6 am 28. Last day of March, it is snowing. I washed curtains and now have my kitchen about all nice and pretty again. It snowed today but it won't stay long.
