August 1942

(Summertime and the living is easy...or maybe not, Rosa breaks her arm and
Rosa is starting to refer to Orby as "Dad" sometimes.)

Saturday, August 1, 1942
4 eggs. Got 2 new dresses, rolling pin, skirt, 3 pair stockings cotton. Got the scoop welded.
Sunday, August 2, 1942
4 eggs. Went to Merle's. Dad and Merle put up fence, had a nice time and dinner. Silva was with us. Merle has some lovely pullets. Their New Hamshire Reds.
Monday, August 3, 1942
5 eggs. Orby went to get his brakes fixed, had a nice rain Saturday and Sunday morning.
Tuesday, August 4, 1942
4 eggs. Finish combining the oats, got around 60 bushel. The old cat had kittens today, but we can't find them.

3 eggs. Did the wash and helped in the yard.
Thursday, August 6, 1942
5 eggs. Got shoes and dress from Montgomery. Sent Orpha a gift and Silva sent Orpah a thimble and needle case, that she made. It sprinkled rain today, and is quite cold. Orby car broke down again last night, the hanger cost $3.00 to fix in same place as broke before.
Friday, August 7, 1942
4 eggs. We did some cleaning today, it is very wet.
Saturday, August 8, 1942
6 eggs. Went to Otsego, It rained and ground is too wet to finish yard. Orby went to sale. Its Orpha's birthday, I gave her rubber mat for sink.
Sunday, August 9, 1942
We will have chicken for dinner. Silva is still here and she cleaned the chicken. Orby is taking down wire fence.
Monday, August 10, 1942
5 eggs. Orby works days this week. It looked like rain, I did not wash, turned out nice. Silva planted 4 peach seeds today. Silva went home today cost $1.05 from Kalamazoo to Dowagiac.
Tuesday, August 11, 1942
6 eggs. I cleaned out cupboards today, had awful headache. Neighbors brought home the trailer. Orby went to Otsego from work to collect rent from Mrs. Warner. Today is Orby's birthday. Merle gave him a box of candies, Orpha got him a knife and chain. Ike got him fence stretcher.

5 eggs. I did my wash, am tired, I guess I am getting old. Got letter from Silva.
Thursday, August 13, 1942
5 eggs. Did the ironing, went to see about buying pullets, they were sold. Received 7 ct. over pay form Spiegel.
Friday, August 14, 1942
6 eggs. Orby sewed grass on back each side of house.
Saturday, August 15, 1942
5 eggs. Merle's over for dinner today, they had Paul, Letha's sister Ruth, youngest son with them. My how Merle's kiddies grow. I drove tractor to day, to help Dad fill in back yard. Dad got a birthday card from Elmer, a card and box of candy from Merle's.
Sunday, August 16, 1942
6 eggs. Finished sowing lawn seed. Daisy was her, brought over Orby birthday present a fence stretcher and card, stayed to supper. Elmer was here for supper, took some pictures of us all and the calf. Had a good visit with them all.
Monday, August 17, 1942
4 eggs. Orby is getting ready to do some fall plowing. Bud, Orpha, Bud's dad and mother were here. Took picture of our June calf 6 weeks old. Heard Merle was to Orphas Saturday night after he left here. (That would be Otto Gimbel and Bud's step-mother Gladys)

5 eggs. Orby went to Vicksburg to get his papers signed for insurance.
Wednesday, August 19, 1942
7 eggs. I did wash and am I tired. I washed my green bedspread for first time. It washed beautifully. Orby started plowing the two west fields. Men at mill had quite a row over letting suddy go home for running on beater. (?)
Thursday, August 20, 1942
6 eggs. I did my ironing. Grass is peeping through. Pigs still getting out. Men had another row at mill but none quit work. (Orby was Foreman at paper mill)
Friday, August 21, 1942
7 eggs. Orby took cow to bull, and this afternoon commenced plowing for wheat.
Saturday, August 22, 1942
4 eggs, 1 broke. Went to Merle's had supper, he likes his new job. Letha gave me some tomatoes, Claire just learned to paddy cake, he is cute.
Sunday, August 23, 1942
Stayed home, Orby is plowing for wheat. He won't listen to me and get hog some ground feed.
Monday, August 24, 1942
5 eggs. Started to pick up my wash and fell and hurt my arm at 7 o'clock was 1:30 pm before it was set. Went to Vicksburg Hospital and then to Borgess. My it sure pains me, I was alone all nite and I about went wild. Today is Daisy's birthday, I got her 2 pair of pillow cases.
Tuesday, August 25, 1942
4 eggs. Arm still hurts, have phoned to Orpha. Orpha come to night will stay a few days.
Wednesday, August 26, 1942
7 eggs. Orpha still here and my arm awful sore, can't hardly stand it.
Thursday, August 27, 1942
3 eggs. Orpha did the wash and is tired. She is thinking of going home tonite, if Bud comes.
Friday, August 27, 1942
Bud did not come so Orby took Orpha home and got Arlene to stay a few days, he went to Dowgiac after her.
Saturday, August 28, 1942
Arlene did the ironing, my arm sure hurt me. Daisy was here a while tonite, says Dorthy going to get married soon.
Sunday, August 29, 1942
4 eggs. Merle's was here so was Elmer's. Merle went to park for parts. Elmer stayed to dinner and supper, that they brought chickens and it sure was good.
Monday, August 30, 1942
Arlene washed the windows and visited.
