October 1942

(Rosa and Orby live at the farm in Vicksburg, on the corner of V Avenue and Portage Road, they also own rental homes on Morrell Street, Wilmot Street, and Orleans Street in Otsego and one in Parchment Michigan. Orby is still working at the paper mill. She is 61 and Orby is 59. They bought Chester).

Thursday, October 1, 1942
4 eggs. I did my wash, Orby hung them out. My arm still sore, Orby hung door in basement and cut 8 shocks of corn.
Friday, October 2, 1942
3 eggs. Went to Otsego today, the parties moved in house on Orleans Street, East S.
Saturday, October 3, 1942
1 egg. Orby went to sale but did not stay long, then we went to look at some stock pigs, sprinkled rain.
Sunday, October 4, 1942
Bought Chester - White boor pig with papers $25.00. Rained last night, wheat is coming up good.
Monday, October 5, 1942
3 eggs. We are fixing fence.
Tuesday, October 6, 1942
2 eggs. We changed the 4 small sow pigs in the small pen, also we rung them so they would not dig up the grass. (My friend Brucie, told me that they used to put rings in the pig's nose so they would not use their nose to dig up the dirt, thanks Bruce).
Wednesday, October 7, 1942
1 egg. I cleaned my downstairs today, Dad started putting on roof of chicken coop. Our wheat is up nice. They started to widen the Portage Road today.

Went to Otsego, Warner moved out today, we bought supply tank $9.67 and 1935 lb. coal $6.80.

1 egg. Its raining, the neighbors was here after some tin cans and I got letter from Sonny. They are going to Orphas Sunday, Bud's Dad will also be there. My Mother died 45 years ago today.

2 eggs. Orby brought new windows for hen house and put them in.

Orby went to sale bought a calf 6 weeks old, weighs 122 lb. cost $13.00.

Stayed home and fixed hog pen in barn. Was a very nice day, Orby and I have commenced receiving one half in everything from now on. (His and Hers)

2 eggs. We finished fixing the pig house. Daisy and Ike were here a while. Ike bought window. 50 ct.

1 egg. I did my washing. Orby piped water in barn, got card from Silva.

Bought 106 New Hampshire hens from Merle at $1.50 a piece also got 39 Legern roosters at 66 ct. a piece. Hens $159.00, Roosters $25.74, $184.74. Merle is moving to Plainwell today. Merle gave me a dandy rooster, bless his dear heart.

50 eggs. 2 eggs fro white hens. Orby put rooking filler on hen coop. I made 3 pies, 2 pumpkin and one custard. I still can't use arm to comb hair but thankful I can use it to work and keep house. We will go help Merle move tomorrow. Paid Merle $50.00 on pullets.

55 eggs. 1 white egg. Helped Merle move, bought 1 egg mash corn oats grit $5.26. Got 4 feeders from Merle and 1 feed barrel, 1 oil barrel.
Monday, October 26, 1942
55 eggs. Went to Otsego this evening to get rent, stopped at Merle's a few minutes, Merle's cold is not much better. Sold 12 doz. eggs at 40 ct. $4.80.

46 eggs. Orby is piping water in hen coop and I am cleaning house.

49 eggs. Nice day, Orby is husking corn, I cleaned my 2 rooms, i sure am tired and arm aches.

57 eggs. Rainy day, I commenced saving cream to make my own butter, tonight first time.

49 eggs. Went to Kalamazoo and bought paper for 2 bedrooms for house on Morrell Street. Cost $2.30. Sold 13 doz. eggs 40 ct. a doz. $5.20.
Saturday, October 31, 1942
57 eggs. It is a damp day, did some wash but will dry clothes in side. I made my first butter from May cow. 1 lb. 5 oz. Orby is piping in hot water in tank, turned out nice day.
