July 1942

(Rosa and Orby live on the farm in Vicksburg Michigan. The Country has been at war for over 6 months, and so far, Rosa's life does not seem effected, at least she is not writing about it, much. Orby is still working at the paper mill and doing some farming. And they sure must eat a lot of eggs.)

Wednesday, July 1, 1942
7 eggs. Drawed up 2 loads hay for us, 4 for them.
Thursday, July 2, 1942
Draw 2 loads of hay, finished making west field hay, got 6 loads hay, 6 loads for men.
Friday, July 3, 1942
7 eggs. Went and got cows, 1 heifer 1 calf. It sure rained when we were on road. (Rosa lists dates that cows/calfs were born, can't quite read it).
Saturday, July 4, 1942
5 eggs. Took hog away, went after 2 sows and 2 pigs. Daisy and Ike and Betty was over for supper. (Betty would be Daisy's Granddaughter) Bought 2 sows and 4 - 10 week old pigs: $89.00 off Mr. Maude Hartwell.
Sunday, July 5, 1942
Stayed home all day and fixed fence as the cow got out.
Monday, July 6, 1942
6 eggs. Stayed home and finished fence. Went to Mrs. Comstock, they will move this fall. Sent Spiegel order back, kept rack, paid 23 ct. parcel post.
Tuesday, July 7, 1942
8 eggs. Did my wash, Orby is building fence.
Wednesday, July 8, 1942
5 eggs. Orby is still fixing fence to keep in cow. Gave $10.00, Orby owes Rosa $10.00. (The money was always divided between His, hers and theirs)
Thursday, July 9, 1942
6 eggs. Went to Merle's to get him to help load the mower. They will come Sunday to spend day. Joyce and David will stay a week. Orby bought tow more pigs $9.00 a piece.
Friday, July 10, 1942
7 eggs. Orby went to Vicksburg to see Dr. as his leg hurts bad. I did my ironing and mopped upstairs. Rained last night.
Saturday, July 11, 1942
5 eggs. Went to Otsego, Betty came home with us. Merle will come tomorrow and leave Joyce and David for 1 week.
Sunday, July 12, 1942
5 eggs. Merle was here to dinner and supper, we ate supper out doors. Merle cultivated corn and beans. The children sure having the time of their lives.

6 eggs. Kids having a swell time. Betty, Joyce and David are all so sweet. I love them all.

8 eggs. We did the wash, was a nice day.

6 eggs. The children had a few fire crackers, we sure had fun.

5 eggs. Orpha was here, brought Bobby to stay a week. A very nice day, went after Silva to stay a while.

4 eggs. Went and got post at Layton $1.25 at 16 ct. each.
Tuesday, July 21, 1942
5 eggs. We did the wash, patched pants. Silva patched one and I patched one. Took hogs to breed and left them.
Wednesday, July 22, 1942
4 eggs. I did my ironing. It is a nice day, Bobby and Orby went after 25 more posts at 11 ct. each.
Thursday, July 23, 1942
4 eggs. Ray and brother-in-law was here a while. Bobby and Orby went to sale, also to Kalamazoo.

4 eggs. We are washing out a few pieces.
Saturday, July 25, 1942
5 eggs. Orpha come after Bobby around 12 tonight. Orpha brought me some powder. Started to sale, Bobby nose bled. Our car broke, cost $5.50 to have it fixed and we were disappointed as we wanted to go to the sale. Willi Wikel died to day.
Sunday, July 26, 1942
2 eggs. Stayed home all day, Mr. Pelong was here from mill. Merle was here for the ladders, they are going to picnic to day with Ruth simington. Daisy an Ike was here.
Monday, July 27, 1942
Bought new lawn mower. It rained a nice shower which we needed badly. Today is sonny's birthday (Merle). We thought of him but could not deliver his gift, will soon. We got him under shirts.

4 eggs. Did the wash. Orby started on back steps, it looks like rain.
Wednesday, July 29, 1942
5 eggs. Sure rained last night. I made apple dumplings for supper. (Wish she would have put that recipe here).

3 eggs. We started to columbine oats today.
Friday, July 31, 1942
6 eggs. Finished steps, plowed back yard.
