December 1941

(Rosa said that they are living in Parchment Michigan, traveling back and forth to the farm in Vicksburg Michigan.)

Orby went to work, I washed clothes today.
Tuesday, December 2, 1941
Merle just phoned me, he had a big boy born, weighed 7 lb. 5 oz., named Clare Albert Fouts. Went to see it tonite.
Wednesday, December 3, 1941
It is a nice warm day but some drizzling rain. Orby went to farm, took Ranger (puppy) along.
Thursday, December 4, 1941
It was a lovely day. We went to Otsego, Allegan then Kalamazoo. Bought coat, shoes and hat. Daisy don't feel so good. I feel some better.

Little colder, went to farm, our light burned out and had to come home with just fog light. Sure glad we make it okay.
Saturday, December 6, 1941
We live in little house in Parchment. Commenced to taking mild of Fred Schuiteboer at 10 ct. a qt. Donald and Mr. Walters was here to rent place.
Sunday, December 7, 1941
To the Japans took advantage of United States at Pearl Harbor and killed many men, wounded a lot more.
Monday, December 8, 1941
United States declared war on Japan. All congress voted for it but 1 woman, Tassel. Finished the furnace, some snow on ground and colder.
Tuesday, December 9, 1941
Mr. Williams put the chicken coop together. Little book I sit and cry, I don't know but I am craving for the arms of my dear children around my neck as in baby times, but no it hardily ever happens. But God alone knows how lonely I am for that little token of love.

Brought chickens over and they are now in coop in garage. They seem to like it in there.

Today, Germany and Italy declared war.

Went to Otsego to get rent, some one had broken out the hall window. Daisy is feeling better. I wore my new coat first time.

Went to Merle's they are real well, the baby is fine. they want to buy 1/2 my hog. Bought 1 doz. eggs 37 ct. I had a nice visit with Mrs. Williams tonight.

I did my washing. Dad fixed the coop together.
Monday, December 15, 1941
Went to Dorthy Ponds got Christmas cards, had a lovely time. Dad went to sale got hog crate.
Tuesday, December 16, 1941
Butchered hog, she weighted at 8 1/2 months old 335 lb. Merle gave me $15.00 for 1/2 and Orby bought 1/2.
Wednesday, December 17, 1941
Stayed home till evening, then went to farm. Don't feel very good.

Went to Merle's to help salt down the hog.
Saturday, December 20, 1941
Went to farm then to Daisy's. Got my cupboards from Sears. Cut up fat, made 4 gallons of lard.

Stayed home. Orpha and Bud was here in evening, they are coming for Christmas.

Today I did my wash, started using American Flakes for washing.
Tuesday, December 23, 1941
I did my ironing. The men are tearing up the street in front of our little house at Parchment.
Wednesday, December 24, 1941
Stayed home till evening, then went to farm. Don't feel so very good. Got first egg.
Thursday, December 25, 1941
Christmas Day. Orpha, Bud, Bobby, Merle, Letha, Joyce, David, Clare were here, had a lovely time got lovely gifts, went to Daisy's after supper.

Went to farm, got sink from Vicksburg. Got 2 eggs. (Here we go with the eggs again)

1 egg. Went to Otsego, got card from Pearl Rollins, Earl Newman, very nice night.
Sunday, December 28, 1941
Merle and Letha was her for supper. I got 1 egg. Quite cold.
Monday, December 29, 1941
Snow on ground, quite cold. Got coal today 1/2 ton. Wrote to Orpha. 3 eggs, 1 broke.
Tuesday, December 30, 1941
Little snow fell. I did wash and ironing. Mrs. Williams was over, had a lovely evening. Got 2 eggs.
Wednesday, December 31, 1941
Went to Merle's, brought Joyce and David to stay a few days. Bud was here for supper. Got 5 eggs.
