November 1942

(Rosa is churning butter to sell, and selling lots of eggs, having baby pigs and killing roosters. And Bud and Orpha Fouts Gimbel move into the house that I was born in, on Lowden Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan)


Sunday, November 1, 1942
47 eggs. Orby finished putting in hot water pipes and am I glad. Today 45 years ago, my daddy died at Denver Indiana, buried at Courter Indiana. Bud, Orpha and Bobby came this evening, stayed all night, they are going to Battle Creek to see about work tomorrow. Bobby will stay with us 1 day.
Monday, November 2, 1942
57 eggs. Sure nice day, Bobby is here to day, going home tonight. We are taking 16 doz. small 2 doz large, sold 16 doz. egg @40 ct. $6.40 kept 2 doz. large eggs.
Tuesday, November 3, 1942
56 eggs. Orby shucked corn. It was nice day, I took white hen out of the leghorn rooster pen. (Foghorn Leghorn?) We turned in the sows pigs with the boar today. It's election day, I wanted to vote so bad but Dad always puts me off.

56 eggs. Merle was over today, him and David. He said David started fire in their basement. They called the fire department to put it out. I made 2 lb. butter today.

57 eggs. This morning makes 1 week since I commenced saving cream. It is raining today.
Friday, November 6, 1942
60 eggs. I churned cream, made 1 lb. 4 oz. of butter. Butter made in 1 week is 4 lbs. 12 oz. Send 3 orders today, 1 Sears, 1 Montgomery 1 Chicago.
Saturday, November 7, 1942
49 eggs. It is a very nice day, Mrs. Hill was here, she wants to buy butter from me. Orby is husking corn. sold 22 doz. eggs @42 ct. per doz. $9.24 ct. Turn boar in with sow pigs today. 2 pigs took him.

48 eggs. Killed 1 rooster, weight 4 lb. 9 oz. Orpha, Bud, and Bobby was here for dinner and supper. Sold Orpha 1 lb. butter and 1 dozen double yolk eggs. Our 2 kittens have come up missing, black yellow white, and yellow white.
Monday, November 9, 1942
56 eggs. It is a rainy bad day, Orby is husking corn this forenoon. Sold 8 doz. eggs @43 cts. $3.44. Went to Otsego to get rent and some groceries. Paid 75 ct. a pound for Crisco, every thing is going sky high.
Tuesday, November 10, 1942
58 eggs. It is snowing today but am washing and I made 2 lb. 7 oz. butter today. Pulled our cabbage today and put in cellar. Sure is a cold bad day, made cake and cup cakes.
Wednesday, November 11, 1942
50 eggs. I hung clothes out to day, it is nice but awful cold. Orby will husk corn this afternoon. Orby cleaned out the hen coop tonight first time. Telephone men gave us 3 poles.
Thursday, November 12, 1942
47 eggs. It is some warmer than yesterday but it is cold. Orby went and got some feed ground. Got minow and swans. Pots and panty and 1 dress today.
Friday, November 13, 1942
62 eggs. It flaked a little snow this forenoon but all gone in short time but it is awful windy and quite cold. Long sow had her pigs tonight, had 10 but layed on one, she has 9 now. Churned 1 lb. 7 oz butter.
Saturday, November 14, 1942
51 eggs. Sure is a lovely day. Bought coal 1,900 lbs. this morning. Orby is husking corn, I am cleaning my rooms. Our other r2 kittens are gone, now we have lost 4 nice kittens. Sold 22 dog. @46 ct. $10.12.

48 eggs. Willard's and Earls was here today, dinner had a very nice time, was nice day. The first sow killed another little pig, now she has 8.
Monday, November 16, 1942
60 eggs. Sold 2 lb. butter, 1 daisy, 1 Letha. Churned 1 lb. 4 oz. It ws a nice day, Orby shucked corn, I cleaned some. My arm is very sore, went to Otsego, got rent. Daisy got a lovely lace basket of flowers from Dorthy. Was to Merle's, he is taking off work, deer hunting.

51 eggs. Mr. Laerka had his corn picked today, we changed the small sows and put them in pen.
Wednesday, November 18, 1942
51 eggs. Killed white rooster. 4 lb. with out head and feathers, churned 1 lb. 13 oz. butter.
Thursday, November 19, 1942
54 eggs. Sold 21 doz @46 ct. $9.66. Orby registered for gas, it is a gloomy day but I did my wash. I am nervous and tired. Sow pigs got out. Have rented the house on Morrell to George Hatten.

53 eggs. It was a lovely day, I did my ironing, man brought load gravel for drive, near road.
Saturday, November 21, 1942
58 eggs. Orby took the tractor and had it fixed, It is cold and gloomy. I churned today 1 lb. 12 oz. Bought first calf meal today, Orby painted. 8 little pigs.
Sunday, November 22, 1942
54 eggs. Daisy and Ike was here for dinner, Ike helped put up pole. It was a very nice day.
Monday, November 23, 1942
57 eggs. Went to Otsego to get rent, sold Daisy 1 doz. eggs and 50 ct. butter, I churned 1 lb. 3 oz.
Tuesday, November 24, 1942
54 eggs. It wasn't very nice out, tried to rain but Orby husked corn. I did not want him to as I am afraid he will get sick.
Wednesday, November 25, 1942
57 eggs. Orby husked corn, I made cake and pie and 3 shells for pumpkin pie. Cleaned house, it sure nice day. Killed white rooster for tomorrow.
Thursday, November 26, 1942
54 eggs. Today is Thanksgiving, was a cold wintry day. Had a very nice dinner, chicken, cake, pie, dressing, potatoes. Granny was all alone, just Dad and I. I churned today 1 lb. 11 oz. butter.
Friday, November 27, 1942
53 eggs. Orby bought coal $13.32 for 3,950 lbs. Sure is cold today, every thing looks froze up. Sure cold, but nice overhead.
Saturday, November 28, 1942
56 eggs. Sold 17 doz eggs $7.82. Bought 50 gal gas $8.10, killed 2 roosters.
Sunday, November 29, 1942
52 eggs. Went to Kalamazoo, Orphas, had them come to dinner, they moved to their home on Lowden Street yesterday. (This is the house I was born in) Merle's came and was here for supper, he bought 2 doz. eggs 92 ct. butter 1 lb. 11 oz. 79 cts. Clare is walking, has walked 2 weeks.
Monday, November 30, 1942
52 eggs. Went to Otsego after rent, took Daisy 50 cts butter, the went to Orpha to help fix gas stove but Bud had it already fixed. Sold Orpha 2 doz. eggs @ 46 ct. 92 cts. Sold 8 doz. eggs to store, sure is nice today.
